In 1954 Abraham Wilson and Gloria Bachman commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a house in Millstone, New Jersey. The Modernist development in the Hamptons, The Houses of Sagaponac, provides a possible unique sanctuary to relocate the Bachman Wilson House within a neighborhood of well-designed houses that emulates a similar design philosophy. This house exemplifies the Usonian philosophy of Mr. Wright, culminating his career. The living room offers a dramatic two-story space, with a wall of glass and an open floor plan of horizontal and vertical planes that pass through the inside and outside allowing the owner to be one with nature. Perforated wooden clerestory panels, a signature Wright design feature, provide a rhythm of geometric forms that are based upon the Samara seedpod, which during the day cast ever-moving light shows passing through the space and provide a lighted lantern in the treetops at night. Completely restored over 10 years, the house features such elements as a Philippine mahogany board and batten wall system and red Colorundum floors, as well as furniture designed by Mr. Wright. By respecting the original Frank Lloyd Wright design, the Bachman Wilson House would be sited in a southeast direction that would provide the intended passive solar orientation. The Cabana / Guest House would be separated from the House with a solar pergola adjacent to the swimming pool providing a seamless connection between the two structures. The Guest House design being sensitive to the scale, form and materials of the Bachman Wilson House would provide integrated living, exercising and working space. Beyond Frank Lloyd Wright's site requirements and radiant heat, Tarantino Architect would now be able to incorporate new sustainable building technologies, such as geo-thermal mechanical and solar energy systems. The proposed relocation of the Bachman Wilson House would be of historic significance, providing the only authentic example in the Hamptons of one of America's most revolutionary architects and designers.
